Senior Security Commander Assassination: A Grim Reminder of AQAP’s Ongoing Threat to Yemen and Beyond.

Tragedy Strikes South Yemen as Al-Qaida Targets Security Belt Commander Abd Al-Latif al-Sayyid. 

In a tragic turn of events, south Yemen was rocked by a suspected Al-Qaeda attack that claimed the lives of a prominent Southern Yemeni military commander and three other individuals. Among the victims was  Abd Al-Latif al-Sayyid, a military commander known for his pivotal role within the Security Belt Forces, a military group that the UAE helped create after 2015 to retake Aden from the Houthis and participate later in a military and security campaign against AQAP. 

Notably, the commander was closely aligned with the Southern Transitional Council, a political and military movement advocating for increased autonomy for southern Yemen. The STC’s aims are rooted in historical and political grievances that trace back to Yemen’s unification in 1990 and the subsequent conflicts that arose due to power imbalances between the north and the south. 

The attack on the “Security Belt” leader occurred mere days after the initiation of a new counter-terrorism campaign by southern forces in South Yemen. This campaign specifically targeted AQAP, mostly militants from Yemen and Saudi Arabia, and regarded by the United States as the most dangerous branch of the network founded by Osama bin Laden.

The timing of the assassination raises questions about potential connections between the attack and the new counter-terrorism efforts. While it is premature to draw concrete conclusions, the incident highlights the intricate web of alliances, rivalries, and conflicts that define Yemen’s current landscape. The ongoing struggle for control between the internationally recognized Yemeni government, the STC, and various other factions has created a vacuum of authority that extremist groups often seek to exploit.
